DIY: Formal Dress

DIY: Formal Dress

Can’t find the perfect formal dress or its all too expensive? I have the solution.. maybe? .. turn a plain looking dress into something a little bit fancy and more appropriate for a formal or ball.

What You Need:

1. A Dress (preferably plain) I got mine from Xenia Boutique (Follow Me Dress) and they’re still selling it (:

2. Material of your choice (something a bit fancy like sequin material.. thats what i used)

3. Sewing Needle

4. Cotton

5. Scissors

6. Pins

How to:

1. Get your chosen dress, lay it out, put your material on top and cut it to the about shape and size  (I’m redoing the top of my dress.. the front and back) I did this in 3 parts..

Part 1: (the front) Once cut to the shape on the front.. pin it on the dress try it on and make sure the edges of the material will go to the edges of the top part of the dress if all good take it off and then sew it ( I sewed it by hand but you can use a sewing machine if you want, probably will be quicker but up to you)

Part 2 & 3: (the back)

I did the back in 2 parts as the zip ran down the middle if your zip is not down the middle or you don’t have a zip then you can do this with one part.

Part 2: Cut the material a little bit bigger as the back of my dress is stretchy if yours is not don’t worry about doing this carry on and repeat part 1. Pin one side of the material on the dress. Put the dress on and get someone else to help you pin the rest of the material onto the dress so it hits the edges (for a dress with a stretchy back so the material will stretch with your body). take it off and sew around the edges.. Repeat this step for part 3 aswell

P.S Sorry i have no step by step pictures to help as I never thought of doing it at the time..

Here is the before and after :)

and i wore it to my last high school formal ever which was last year :(

10 ways to overcome heat at night

As it is summer here in New Zealand,

last night it was soo hot that i could not sleep, yes i had windows open and was lying on top of the bed but it was still really hot that i could not sleep.

so i googled some ways to help you sleep when its really hot and I thought i would share them with you (:

1. Get a wet cold cloth and wipe your whole body with it. (tried this and it was so hot that the water evaporated so fast that i couldn’t get to sleep as it got hot again).

2. Sleep in a damp t-shirt (um won’t i get sick?)

3. Sleep nude (this could be awkward if my parents or brother walks in)

4. Take a cool shower or bath and don’t fully dry yourself then get into your bed

5. Chill your pillowcase. Put your sheets, blanket, and pillowcases into freezer bags and put in the freezer all day. This may also help you fall asleep faster, further reducing your exposure to the uncomfortable heat. (I shall try this next time).

6. Wear cold socks (gross it would feel weird.. but never know it could work)

7. Have a fan blowing on you (unfortunately I don’t own a fan :(.. maybe i should invest in one)

8. Avoid drinking caffeine or alcohol at night as it makes you sleep but than wakes you up later on in the night.

9. Have thin cotton sheets rather than nylon bedding. They will absorb sweat rather than leave the sleeper covered in a film of moisture.

10. If none of these work try having naps during the day so you won’t be so tired when you find yourself struggling to sleep on a hot night (:

Let me know if you tried any of these or have any more ways of overcoming hot nights

Bula Fiji

Last Tuesday I just got back from Fiji.. Fiji was amazing. It is winter over there atm but its sooo hot, hotter than New Zealand summer. The First few days we stayed at smugglers cove hotel and went swimming in the beach. Then for a week we went to LEWA Village and it took us 4 hours drive from nadi and we did a week of worship with Lewa primary school, it was an awesome experience the people there were so nice and made us heaps of food and i got to try sugar cane for the first time, it tasted really sweet. At the Village we had to wash ourselves in the river which was a new experience and luckily we took heaps of toilet paper because they don’t use toilet paper at the village lol anyway the last few days we went back to smugglers cove and we went to south sea island which was sooo awesome we went snorkeling and i picked up a starfish and we also went kayaking. We went shopping in Nadi town centre on the last day and i spent way too much lol.. soo many amazing  memories were made. I heart Fiji and would go back again! (:
